With an eye on conscious consumption, the children’s industry invests in multifunctional furniture

Preparing a baby’s room remains one of the most symbolic moments in the arrival of a child, but it increasingly requires a strategic decision making process. Far from being only about aesthetics, the choice of furniture involves safety, practicality and adaptation to the household routine, reflecting changes in family behaviour and in the dynamics of care itself.

In recent years, the children’s furniture sector has undergone a significant transformation. While standardised and highly decorative sets once predominated, the focus is now also on more versatile items, capable of accompanying the child’s growth and the demands of everyday life.

Safety remains a basic premise. Cots, chests of drawers and armchairs must comply with specific manufacturing standards, with attention to details such as spacing between bars, structural stability and the absence of sharp corners. At the same time, new solutions are emerging that combine protection and comfort. This is the case with cots featuring cane webbing panels, which have been gaining ground due to their minimalist look and their ability to help create a more ventilated environment for babies, especially in warmer regions, without compromising resistance when produced according to the required standards.

Functionality, in turn, has become one of the main selection criteria. The search for multifunctional furniture follows an increasingly dynamic routine and the need to optimise both space and investment. Cots that convert into junior beds, chests of drawers with built in changing units and modular wardrobes are examples of solutions designed to evolve alongside the child.

“When we talk about furniture and products for the children’s segment, there are two fundamental pillars: quality and functionality,” says Georgia Moriyama, Marketing Manager at Grupo Madeiranit, during the brand’s participation at Fit Pueri Expo. “We work with products that accompany the child’s growth, from birth through to later stages, precisely to make families’ routines easier and to avoid the need for multiple purchases over time.”

According to the executive, this logic goes beyond saving money. “It is a period when everything happens very quickly, time flies, and this requires a great deal of attention from parents. That is why having products that adapt to different stages helps optimise everyday life and allows families to make better use of this moment,” she adds.

Another movement gaining strength, and seen at the event dedicated to childrenswear and childcare products, is the search for more sustainable solutions. Interest in natural materials, reforested wood and non toxic finishes follows a growing concern with environmental impact and babies’ health.

As a result, brands in the sector have been expanding their portfolios to meet this demand. Bell’baby, for example, was founded with a focus on 100% natural latex mattresses and has recently expanded into children’s furniture. Today, the company invests in versatile products, such as sofas that transform into playful structures and Montessori style beds.

More than simply following trends, these changes reflect a broader transformation: the baby’s room is no longer seen as a static space, but as a living environment that adapts to the child’s growth and the family’s routine.

Among launches and new proposals, what can be seen at Fit Pueri Expo is a market increasingly guided by solutions that balance design, functionality and responsibility, closely following the new demands of contemporary parenting.
